1st PET/CT Scan
Had a PET/CT skull base to mid-thigh. Following the IV administration of F-18-FDG and one hour delay, multiplanar image acquisitions of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis were obtained from the base of the skull to the midthighs. As part of the exam, a nondiagnostic CT scan was obtained over the same region. The CT scan was used for anatomic correlation and attenuation correction. A 3D MIP PET scan was reviewed as a cine sequence on their computer workstation. FDG Dose: 12.8 mCi
Findings were HEAD/NECK: Mildly increased FDG uptake within a small, subcentimeter right upper cervical chain lymph node located just deep to the angle of the right mandible, with maximum SUV measuring up to 4.2, nonspecific. No other abnormal FDG uptake was identified within the visualized head or neck. Normal, physiologic uptake is present within the visualized brain, base of the tongue, salivary glands, and vocal chords.
CHEST: There is avid abnormal increased FDG uptake within a previously described 3.5 cm mass within the suprahilar left upper lobe, with maximum SUV measuring up to 14.5, consistent with primary bronchogenic carcinoma. No other abnormal FDG uptake suspicious for primary or metastatic malignancy is identified within the chest. There was no hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy and no pleural effusion. Normal, physiologic uptake is present within the left ventricle. There was no significant pulmonary emphysema or interstitial lung disease. IMPRESSION:
1. 3.5 cm left upper lobe primary bronchogenic carcinoma.
2. No convincing evidence of metastatic disease. There was a small, subcentimeter right upper cervical chain lymph node demonstrating mildly increased FDG uptake, this would be highly unusual for metastatic disease, particularly given lack of any hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and was most likely reactive.
This was the first time that I had ever had a PET scan and when I saw the tube that I would be going into, anxiety set in. It took every part of my conscious and subconscious to live up to my life motto of "Mind over Matter" I have preached that to my kids since they were old enough to understand and I have let them know that the mind is a powerful tool that has the ability to do wonderful things when you have a positive attitude. So now I am struggling with practicing what I preached for years. With a lot of sweat and inner dialogue to myself saying. "Your daughter has been through dozens of these without a single issue, tear or complaint so you get your 6'-3" and 225 body into that tube and stop being a giant baby!!" I did it but I failed miserably at mind over matter. My mind was focused on what if this machine breaks down? How will they ever get me out of here. If you've never been in the tube then don't criticize but if you have been, I think you'll know what I mean, but I did survive!! Thank you Jesus!!
